Bike Riding SafetyRiding on a bike, go-kart or scooter can be lots of fun and help entertain your children for hours, but remember that safety comes first!

An important factor to consider when you buy a bike, scooter or the like is about safety. Wearing a helmet is the #1 safety rule to keep in mind. The helmet helps protect the head so if any injuries occur, the damage won't involve the head. This is equally important for adults and children. No matter the age - keep yourself safe!

Here are some facts to consider when purchasing a helmet.

  • Make sure your child is wearing the right helmet that properly fits the childís head. If the helmet is too loose, it will slide around and if itís too tight it will be uncomfortable.
  • It would be a good idea to purchase a brightly colored helmet so your child will be seen by day and night, making it safer.
  • A helmet can last from 3-5 years so make sure to adjust the straps to fit well. It should come all the way around the ears and under the chin. If the straps are too tight it can cut into the skin causing it to be uncomfortable.
  • The helmet should be comfortable going all the way around the head while covering the forehead up to one inch above the eyes.
  • Make sure your helmet meets all the safety standards and it should have a label inside indicating so.
  • You can also have your child pick out his or her own helmet thereby making it more exciting and your child will want to wear it often.
